live. melissa: we start tonight with breaking news. it has been a tumultuous day in washington. both sides apparently in a total deadlock in the fiscal cliff negotiations. president obama is expected to make a statement on where things stand at any moment here. and with a preview we have fox businesses peter barnes. he is at the white house. peter what do we expect to hear? >> well, melissa, right now the president is finishing up on meeting with senate democratic leader harry reid who came down here to try to talk with the president with some strategy moving forward to avert the fiscal cliff. we expect the president to say that he still wants to get a deal with republicans to do that. that is still going to be time. however, that they will have to do it after the christmass3 holiday. the president plans, is planning to go to hawaii for christmas with his family. speaker boehner has left town. gone back to ohio. for the holiday. the senate is expected to come back on, on december 27th, the thursday next week, which is the earliest that they would be expected to get back to work on th

of "fox news sunday". maybe the worst-kept secret in washington. everybody expected it was going to be john kerry. what does he bring to this post, chris? >> well he certainly brings experience. he has been a member of the senate a long time. he is chairman as wendell said of the senate foreign relations committee. he seems to have a good working relationship between president obama and his national security team. in fact obama has used him several times as a personal envoy to deal particularly with problems in pakistan and afghanistan. it got to a point where hamid karzai, the president of afghanistan preferred to deal with john kerry, the personal envoy the president, rather than the u.s. ambassador there. his latest role had been that he played mitt romney in preparations for the presidential debates. some people said that the president didn't like the fact that he, kerry, was a little long-winded during those debate preps. obviously after the first one, president did pretty well. kerry obviously did pretty well playing romney. he will get the job which he clearly hungered for

for it. >> good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. tonight washington republicans are wasting our time. republicans are supposed to vote on john boehner's infamous plan b at this hour. the house is in recess as republican leaders basically are scrambling to get all the votes. house speaker john boehner pushed for a vote on the bill even though it has no chance of surviving in the senate. it would be vetoed by the president if it did. boehner's plan b. it makes tax increases permanent for income above $1 million. compared to the white house plan, basically, folks, it's a joke. president obama proposed a $2.5 trillion package. $1.2 trillion would come from spending cuts. $1.3 trillion would come from tax increases. plan b only includes $1 trillion in tax revenue and the rest of course is unspecified. it also includes no deal on raising the debt ceiling. president obama's latest offer takes the debt ceiling off the table for the next two years, which i think most americans want. boehner flat out lied to the american people today when he announced tonight's vote. >> pr
